The is a story about two boys named Amir and Hassen who live in Kabul, Afghanistan. Amir is a sensitive boy who loves to read books. He believes that his father thinks less of him because his mother died giving birth to him. He also thinks that his father thinks less of him because he does not like to take part in manly pursuits such as soccer.

Hassen is the son of Amir’s father servant. He is a Hazara. He is a loyal servant and is an excellent kite runner. Hassen and Amir grew up together and are great friends. Some in the community believe that a Hazara are inferior.

Assef is a local bad boy. He is known for carrying around brass knuckles and beating up other kids. One day Assef corners Amir and Hassen in an alley. Assef is going to beat up Amir because he associates with a Hazara. Hassen bravely stands up to Assef by threatening to shoot him in the eye with his slingshot.

Hassen is an excellent kite runner and can seem to find kites without looking at the sky. There is a local kite tournament. The kites battle in the sky until the kite string breaks. The kite runner then runs after the kite that falls to the ground. The last kite remaining is the winner. At this tournament Amir is flying the kite and is the last kite in the sky. Amir is so happy because he knows that his dad will be so proud of him. Hassen takes off running to find the fallen kite. Amir takes off after Hassen. Amir finally catches up with Hassen, he sees that Assef is threatening Hassen again. Amir wishes that he was brave enough to stand up to Assef especially since Hassen protected him earlier. Amir does not stand up for his friend and Assef commits the unthinkable. He rapes Hassen. Amir sees this but is so ashamed of his cowardice that he runs and hides. He then pretends that he does not know what happened.

As time goes by, Amir stops being a friend to Hassen. Hassen is still the servant but the relationship has changed. Amir wants for his father to send Hassen and his father away. On Amir’s thirteenth birthday party, Amir receives many presents. He then comes up with a plan to get rid of Hassen. He hides some birthday money and a watch in Hassen’s bedroom. He then accuses Hassen of stealing them. Hassen confesses to this crime even though he did not do it. Amir’s dad forgives Hassen. Amir does not know what tp think about this forgiveness from his father. But more astonishing is that Hassen’s father declares that they are leaving. Amir gets what he wanted. Hassen is now gone. Once again Amir feels that he has disappointed his dad in someway.

Eventually, Amir and his father move to the United States. Amir gets married and life goes on. Until one day Amir receives a phone call from Afghanistan asking him to come to Afghanistan because to discover the “way for him to be good again”. The Taliban has taken a firm hold over Afghanistan so making this journey is very dangerous. While in Afghanistan he discovers that Hassen had a family. Hassen had a son named Sohrab. Amir also discovers that Hassen was his half-brother. This is very distressing for Amir because he feels like he has lived a lie. So Amir goes on a hunt to find Sohrab. He finally finds Sohrab in the hands of Assef. Assef has been sexually abusing Sohrab. Amir and Assef fight and it is Sohrab who ends the fight by shooting a pebble in the eye of Assef. Sohrab and Amir make their escape. After more heartache Sohrab comes to America to live with Amir.

To me this is a story of friendship, loyalty and betrayal. It moved me to read about Hassen and his loyalty to Amir. I would like to think that I would stand up for my friends but I am afraid that I would fail just as Amir did. It was also a story of redemption. Amir was able to make amends for his actions against Hassen by helping Sohrab. I also think Amir was able to find peace at last for what he saw as his cowardice.

Thanksgiving 2009

This year we had a hard time deciding what to do for Thanksgiving. At one time I was going to cook a turkey that my adult son had purchased. We were going to have a traditional family meal like we have done in past years except that all the extended family was not coming over. Then my son learned that he had to work on Thanksgiving. (He is an EMT) So after much discussion we decided that we would go out to eat for a change. For once I would not be spending all morning cooking. I did make a cheesecake for later in the day. Then for the rest of the day I read a book, knitted and tried to figure out what to do. It was nice but I actually missed the cooking. So two o’clock arrived and we were off to the Cracker Barrell Restaurant. Now my father-in-law warned us that there would probably be a wait. I thought my dear husband was going to create a huge scene when he discovered the wait was over an hour-long. Fortunately, Cracker Barrell has a nice shop that we spent the time in looking around. Finally after waiting over an hour, the waitress seated us at a table. I ordered the standard Thanksgiving meal – turkey, ham, dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans and a piece of pumpkin pie. My husband and daughter ordered something else off the regular menu and they were upset when the waitress told them they were out of coleslaw. Everything was going pretty well. We finished eating and paid our bill. Now, for those who do not know, my husband is a firefighter. As we were leaving the restaurant, he received a fire call about a shed being on fire. So now we are speeding down the road with the emergency lights blazing to get to this house that has a shed on fire. I was for sure that we were going to hit a car. Anyway, my stomach began to feel a little queasy from all that fast driving. Fortunately, the shed fire was very small. (The owners put ashes in a plastic bag and set the bag in the shed.) Nobody was hurt.

In conclusion, my husband decided that next year we would stay home for Thanksgiving and we would cook the traditional Thanksgiving feast. Apparently, having leftover turkey is better than waiting in line for an hour to eat. And I agree.

This evening we are planning on watching the University of Texas and Texas A&M football game. My daughter is cheering for A&M. I am cheering for Texas. Go Longhorns!

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

This past Sunday during worship services we sang the following song.

When Upon Life’s Billows

When upon live’s billows you are temptest-tossed,
When you are discourage thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all:
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Chorus: Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God had done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God had done.

This song seems to have more meaning for me this year. Many of my friends are dealing with money issues, health issues, and relationship issues. For me it seems that maybe I have been tossed about some and have gotten discouraged. So I thought it would be appropriate for me to make a Thanksgiving list this year of my blessings.

1. I am thankful for God and his saving grace.
2. I am thankful for my kids who are young adults – even when it seems at times that we do not get along so well.
3. I am thankful for my husband who loves me even when I am not being the nicest person.
4. I am thankful that my husband and I have jobs so we are able to pay our bills.
5. I am thankful that we have our health – even though we have aches and pains.
6. I am thankful for our house – a place to sleep.
7. I am thankful that I live in America.
8. I am thankful for my extended family. It is hard this year because we are not able to be together like we have been for past Thanksgiving Day.
9. I am just plain thankful that I have been granted another day of life.

Another Movie Experience: 2012

One of the movies that my daughter, Emily wanted to see over Thanksgiving break was 2012. So last night Emily, Melinda and I went to the movies. Sometimes I feel way behind the times. My daughter and her friends are all into movies. They started talking about the Mayan prophecy and I am going what??? Anyway, they explained that this movie was about the Mayan prophecy coming true and what happens to the earth.

I will say this about the movie. It has a lot of destruction. It is amazing that Jackson Curtis is able to drive his car while the earth is shifting all over the plan. Later he is driving a mobile home and it is amazing that he is not hit by a fire-ball.

I do sometimes have a problem when I watch TV or movies on a work night. I sit down and then my eyelids get so heavy. It is hard to keep them open. I had that problem during this movie, too. I struggled through the first 30 minutes or so trying to stay awake. Then I guess I get my second wind because the movie started getting interesting.

I was mainly intrigued by how people behave when disaster occurs. The behavior/attitude that I find most disgusting is the “how to save myself first”. The more attractive behavior/attitude is the “putting others before me even when faced with death”. Both of these behaviors/attitudes are in this movie. I was very happy that the more attractive behavior/attitude won out at the end of this movie.

Musical instrument of the Future

What an interesting musical instrument!! It seems to me that this is an electric guitar, piano, and maybe saxaphone all combined together. What do you think?

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Movie Experience

My daughter is home from college for Thanksgiving break. One of the things that she likes to do when she is home is to go to the movies. I am fortunate that she likes to go with me. We decided to go to this particular movie on Sunday afternoon. Luckily, we arrived in just enough time to get tickets for the 1:45pm showing. We were excited about no line – that is until it dawned on us we would probably get lousy seats. We ended up sitting on the second roll. Surprisingly, my neck did not get too sore.

Usually when I go to the movies, the movie has been out for a while so finding seats and waiting in lines is sort of foreign to me. Also, is being in a theater full of people – mainly teenage girls is pretty different too. I do believe that every time Jacob Black took off his shirt every teenage girl sighed. I thought this movie had more action scenes than the first movie. (During the first movie I got pretty tired of all the love-sick staring between Bella and Edward Cullen.)

Basically, this movie is about a girl in love with a vampire. They cannot be together, because every time the girl hurts herself and bleeds it causes an uproar in the family. The vampire family decides to leave. Bella then spends a lot of time as a forlorn heartbroken teenager. She does discover that if she does anything that puts her in jeopardy that Edward’s image appears to warn her. Bella decides that riding fast motorcycles will be what she needs to bring up Edward’s image. She gets her friend Jacob Black to help refurbish these motorcycles. Over the course of time they become very close. Bella also discovers that her friend also had supernatural powers – the ability to change into a wolf. Now the wolves protect the people from the vampires.

Who will Bella choose? Jacob the wolf or Edward the vampire. Bella chooses Edward. She races against time to keep Edward from showing himself in the light and to save him from the Volturi.

Actually, I am not sure how I feel about this movie. I like to read books and watch movies about a boy meeting a girl and they somehow fall in love. But, something in this love story is disturbing to me. I think it is because I am not comfortable with the idea of being in love with a vampire and the idea of suicide that is in this movie. I know it kind of has a Romeo and Juliet theme. So I wonder if I have never really ever liked the story of Romeo and Juliet?

I was very touched by this story of two Afghan women and how their lives cross spanning from the 1960’s to the year 2003.  This story starts with a woman named Mariam.  At the beginning of the story she is a small child and knows that she is different.  Different because she is not wanted.  She thinks that her father loves her and that it is her mother that dislikes her.  When Mariam turns fifteen, Mariam realizes that her father is ashamed of her too.  Through the chain of events Mariam finds herself married to a man quite a bit older than her.  As time passes, Mariam is unable to give Rasheed the son he so much desires.  Because of this he becomes quite abusive toward her. Years pass.  Mariam does not have many friends.

In the same neighborhood that Mariam lives is a young girl named Laila. Laila is very beautiful.  All during Laila’s childhood she has been friends with a boy named Tariq.   At this time the war comes to Afghanistan, and Kabul is bombarded.   Tariq’s family is going to leave Kabul.  When Tariq comes by to say good bye to Laila the emotional farewell ends with them makeing love.  The war becomes bad that Laila’s family decided to leave Kabut too.  But before they do their house is bombed.  Laila parents are killed and Laila is badly wounded.  Laila is dug out of the rubble by Rasheed.  Rasheed and Mariam nurse her back to health.

During this time Laila realizes that she is pregnant.  She agrees to become Rasheed’s second wife after being told that Tariq is dead.  Laila gives birth to a daughter named Aziza.  Rasheed is very unhappy with the birth of daughter and becomes suspicious.  Rasheed becomes even more abusive.  Eventually Mariam and Laila become confidants.

As the years pass,  Laila gives birth Rasheed’s son – Zalmai.  The Taliban has risen in power.  The region is experiencing a drought and the living conditions have become poor.  The family sends Aziza to an orphanage.  One day Tariq appears outside the orphanage.  Tariq comes to Rasheed’s house and the passion between them has never died. When Rasheed returns home from work, Zalmai tells his father about the visitor to the house.  Rasheed savagedly beats Laila and is about to kill her.  Mariam takes a shovel and kills Rasheed.

Laila and Tariq leave together.  Mariam confesses to killing her husband and is executed.  After the war Laila and Tariq return to Kabul.  But first Laila returns to Mariam’s hometown and discovers that Mariam’s father always regretted sending her away.

This book gave me a glimpse of how life must be in a country where women do not have many rights. I do not believe that Mariam knew what is was like to have companionship and a good relationship with someone until Laila through her actions shows her friendship.  I was much touched with Mariam’s sacrifice so that Laila and Tariq could be together.  I do not think that as a mother, wife, friend that I truly know what it means to sacrifice so much for someone else.  I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to others to read.

I love the song “Amazing Grace”.  I get goosebumps when the bagpipes play.  What is your favorite song?

A Near Perfect Saturday

What makes a perfect Saturday? This may sound crazy but for me it means getting up at 5:30 am. Yes, I did say 5:30 am. I love to have my quiet time in the morning – a little bible study, a cup of coffee, and then after that reading the newspaper. At 7:30 am I head up to our exercise room. When we remodeled our garage – well, we actually tore down the old garage and built a new one and made it two stories – we added the exercise room. I decided to do some circuit training for about 30 minutes. After cooling down and eating breakfast, it is time for my weekly Saturday call from my mom. Today we had a good conversation. It lasted an hour. I felt good about all the things we talked about.

Then it was time for yard work. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining. It was not too hot – just 80 degrees. It was fun mowing the grass and raking the leaves. I also worked in the small garden we try to grow. Last weekend I planted spinach and blue bonnets. This weekend, I planted collards. Our tomato plants are growing nicely. They have some blossoms on them. I am hoping the fall garden is a bigger success than the spring. Truth be told, it will not take much for this garden to be better than the spring one. We also decided to take a pile of trash to the landfill. I know anyone reading this would say Yuk!!! but I like that feeling I get after working hard. That tired but good feeling.

Tonight plans included lighting up the chiminea and then watching the movie “Marley and Me”.  I can hardly wait.

Where are the socks???

I do not know if I am like the rest of the population. But I have a problem with socks. No matter how hard I try I end up with a bunch of socks that have no mates. How can this happen? I wash all the socks and every single time I will have a couple of them that are “singles”. I do have this rather large box (a shoe box that boots came in) that is stuffed full of single socks. Every time I get a single in the wash I carefully check the “box”. I am quite excited whenever I find a match. But most of the time another single is added to the box. This box has become overcrowded.

As an accountant, my workload was lightened up considerably. Our office is closing on Fridays until the new year arrives. At this annoucement my heart pounds with excitement. How does this relate to socks? Well, I will be able to catch up on housework that has been neglected for sometime. Well, I started looking under the cushions of the sofa and what do I find??? Socks!!! I think under every chair or sofa that has cushions on them had socks stuffed in them. I decided that I would also clean in the spare bedrooms. I have these now since my son has moved out and my daughter is away at college. Well, under the pillows were my socks.

Somebody is stealing my socks!! Since I was home all day today, I caught the culprit. It is my “sweet” dog Corky. He is taking my socks that I stuff in my shoes and then sleeping on them.

So today, I washed up all the socks. Looked through the “single” box and matched up as many as I could. Then I did a very liberating thing – I through the rest of the socks away. I am sure that in a couple of months time my “singles” box will be full again. But I now know that I must check under the cushions/pillows for socks that my sock thief has taken.
