Time is Short

Today I traveled to Brooklyn, New York with my daughter E to visit Pratt University. The flight up was an exercise in patience. We thought we allowed plenty of time to check in bags and go through security. However, once we entered the airport my heart sank when I saw the lines. Who would have thought that the entire city of Houston were boarding planes to start their summer vacations. When we checked our bags we were told that our bags probably would not make our flight.

We arrived at the boarding gate just as the doors closed. We were not alone in this situation either. Travelers were getting upset…flight personnel were trying their best to find alternate flights….the plane was still at the gate but once the door closes it cannot be reopened. You could see the frustration radiating from everyone. I don’t know what happened but just as we were making the decision to get on separate flights the doors were opened and we were able to board. Relief was felt by everyone. Getting our bags late seemed like a small thing when you consider the headache of flying standby to New York.

We checked into the Condor Hotel which is located a couple do blocks from the school. The hotel is very nice. The beds were kind of small….a little bigger than a twin and smaller than a full. I also noticed that on the doorpost do all the rooms is a mesuzah. Then I noticed as we walked in the neighborhood that the hotel is in the heart of the Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community. I felt strange walking around…different…like I did not belong.

We ate lunch at White Castle. My first White Castle burger…interesting indeed. The establishment only had 2 tables outside. The unsettling part was placing and receiving your order through holes made in plexiglass. I did not like all the graffiti on the buildings. It seems like a rough place…not the place I want to leave my sweet, baby girl. I know she is an adult….24…and I’m lucky she allows me to make this trip with her, but I still want to keep her close and protected….being a mom is hard.

We finally found the campus, the area improved. The campus looked like it was well secured. Tomorrow we will find out more when we tour the campus. My fears subsided some…

I realized that time is short for me to enjoy the days remaining that E lives with me….that I need take time, to enjoy each moment fully and to listen so E knows and feels my love.

Everyday take time. Everyday take time to feel the sun and the wind and the rain and feel that you are loved — and then let your life overflow with that love so that a thousand others feel that love. Ever day take time to live loved — and live so others feel loved. Every day take time. Time is there for the taking. For the unwrapping ….Give someone the gift of listening… linger and look into their eyes and really listen and this is free and nobody can buy it and what is better than paying attention to someone with all of you fully present?Ann Voskamp

What’s Happening……

Well, it has happened once again. Tax season got the best of me and all my good intentions aka as “resolutions” came to a screeching halt as tax season progressed. Also, I had some surgery and now find myself with some extra time on my hands – at least for the next 10 days or so.  The surgery was not fun – but because of pain medication the laying around in bed is and has not been too bad either.  It felt very nice to have family members cook me dinner and bring me things I needed.  And it has been nice to let those household chores that I tend to do when I have free time to go undone for awhile and not feel guilty about it.  I have spent time reading, taking naps and sitting outside in our gazebo.

Today I decided to figure out all the passwords that I changed because of Heartbleed and catch up on my not to consistent blog.

Okay…here is a little bit of a recap.

I visited my mom and dad and we had our annual birthday celebration together.

I was proud of myself. Ran the whole way with out walking..

We were proud of Emily.

I won a medal!

The best part though was the Gritty Goddess Mud Run and time at the beach.  I had so much fun with my family….

We had to spend some time relaxing in Galveston and no place is better than the beach….however, this time the seaweed was a little out of control.  We did manage to catch some rays.

All in all it has been a very busy couple of months….the best part was being with family.

Camping Fun

Today I was quite lazy. Slept until 7:30 am. After some reading and breakfast, Marc and I decided to do a paddling trail.

It took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the trail. It was through some swampy areas. I thought we were going to get stuck in one area but we persevered and made it though the water plants.

After lunch and siesta time, we went geocaching. All I can say is I’m so thankful for bug spray. By the way we did find the hidden treasure.

We were hot and sweaty so it was time to jump in the lake.

We were a little disappointed that the water was so warm…..it was like swimming in Galveston in July/August.

Evening activities – sitting by the fire.

We are thinking about star gazing once it gets really dark.

A relaxing day……

Weekend Happenings

This Friday Marc and I both had the day off. After completing some chores, mainly grocery shopping. We headed to the beach with one stop at DSW. For those that do not know, DSW is this huge shoe store. They only sell shoes and they have all kinds. Today I was looking for some new Merrill’s. A few years ago I had some feet problems and the foot doctor recommended athletic shoes to wear most of the time during the day. He recommended this type of shoe so that inserts can fit into the shoe. This is not pretty or stylish when you work in an office and wear slacks everyday. Anyway, I settled for Merrell’s.

This is a picture of my old shoes-well one of my old shoes.

Here is a picture of the new shoes. Im not sure how much I like the back of the shoe. The rubber goes way up the back. They seem more sporty.

After much thought, I decided that I would buy them and to heck with style. I guess it is a sign that I’m getting old…..that I want to buy the same style of something I like because it is comfortable rather that stylish.

After the shoe store, we headed to Galveston Island. This time we went to Pocket Park #1. Just Skid-O-Cans (otherwise know as portable toilets) for toilets. In the summer they can be a real sauna. The plus to the park – you could drive your vehicle on the sand. The beach was crowded. Probably because the day before was the last day of school. The water was cool and pretty clear for a summer day here.
Here are a few pictures of our afternoon at the beach.

The birdsMore birdsDSC02640_edited-1Sand Head....I love the sand art….the hair is the best part.

I also spent time doing something with all those tiny Roma tomatoes.  Yep….it is salsa time.  Last year I put up 49 jars of salsa.  This year…who knows.  It is taking quite a few tomatoes to make these 8 jars.

On the way to Arkansas

Today Marc and I are on the way to bring home my daughters “stuff”. She is moving out of the dorm since she will be spending the spring semester in New York.

The day started off early. We were on the road by 6:30am. After driving for an hour we stopped at McDonalds for breakfast. I was able to have my coffee fix – a peppermint mocha coffee with a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.

On the road we noticed the color of the trees.

Very pretty!

The trip usually takes 8-9 hours. To pas the time I am reading this book.

20111214-150725.jpg So far I really like the story. Here is a quote from the book that I like.

The berries. I realize the answer to who I am lies in that handful of poisonous berries. If I held them out to save Peeta because I knew I would be shunned if I came back without him, them I am despicable. If I held them out because I loved him, I am self-centered, although forgivable. But if I held them out to defy the Capitol, I am someone of worth. The trouble is, I don’t know what I was going on inside me at the moment.

Just a little bit longer and we should be at our destination

Random Thoughts on December 10, 2011

  1. Well, I finally have a Pinterest account.  It seemed to me that I have been trying to get an account since Thanksgiving.  Finally, after begging my daughter for an invitation I was off the waiting list and accepted.  I am still trying to learn how it all works.  I do know that there are a lot of interesting things on the internet…. like Choffy.
  2. Yesterday afternoon my Choffy came in the mail. I was very impressed with how fast it came, too.   Choffy is roasted Cocoa beans that you brew like you do coffee.  I love dark chocolate so when I saw this on the internet I knew I would like it.  I decided to make some  in my regular coffee maker.  (The recommended method is to use a french press.)  It look a long time for the water to drip through to the pot.  I stirred in a little bit of Stevia and some half and half into my cup.  It had a good chocolate taste.  Anyway, I decided that while I was out shopping I would  buy a french press.
  3. What was I thinking today —-  During the week, I made my annual mammogram for Saturday. For starters, I was paranoid that I would forget my appointment.  I could not concentrate on anything prior to the appointment.   I also thought since the mammogram place was by the mall that I would do a little shopping – pick up some Christmas gifts and of course a french press – surely it would not be to crowded yet. Was I wrong!  The traffic was a nightmare.  The stores were crowded.  The checkout lines were long.  I did get the french press but I had to bite my tongue when a lady cut in front of me in the check out lane.
  4. Tonight for supper I decided that I would make a pizza.  Usually, my husband likes to have just a pepperoni or hamburger pizza.  But because he was working I could be a little creative with my toppings.  So I made a hamburger, Kalamata olives, spinach, bacon pizza.  It was pretty tasty.

Now I am pretty tired — I think I will get ready for bed and read the last few remaining chapters of the “Hunger Games”.

Marc’s coworkers celebrated the time he worked with them by presenting him with this white leather fire helmet, his badge and ribbons.  We had a great time talking about old times and changes that have taken place since he made his move to Pearland.

Trip to Galveston – A Little Late

Last month my husband and I needed to take a mini-vacation.  Tax season was finally over.  Marc was very busy working, too.  It felt so nice to catch up on some much needed laundry in the morning and then to drive down to Galveston to relax in the sand and sun.  Our first stop was on the way – Hitchcock cemetery. that is where Marc’s mother is buried.  I just love the way the trees look with the moss hanging down.  It makes me think that I should be driving up to a mansion instead of a grave site.  After that it was off to Galveston.  The waves were rough on this day.  The upside to that is that the surfers were out in force and that is always fun to watch since that usually only happens when a hurricane is in the Gulf.  I did not get any pictures of them actually surfing since I only had my little Sony DSC-W120.  It was a good day!

A Near Perfect Saturday

What makes a perfect Saturday? This may sound crazy but for me it means getting up at 5:30 am. Yes, I did say 5:30 am. I love to have my quiet time in the morning – a little bible study, a cup of coffee, and then after that reading the newspaper. At 7:30 am I head up to our exercise room. When we remodeled our garage – well, we actually tore down the old garage and built a new one and made it two stories – we added the exercise room. I decided to do some circuit training for about 30 minutes. After cooling down and eating breakfast, it is time for my weekly Saturday call from my mom. Today we had a good conversation. It lasted an hour. I felt good about all the things we talked about.

Then it was time for yard work. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining. It was not too hot – just 80 degrees. It was fun mowing the grass and raking the leaves. I also worked in the small garden we try to grow. Last weekend I planted spinach and blue bonnets. This weekend, I planted collards. Our tomato plants are growing nicely. They have some blossoms on them. I am hoping the fall garden is a bigger success than the spring. Truth be told, it will not take much for this garden to be better than the spring one. We also decided to take a pile of trash to the landfill. I know anyone reading this would say Yuk!!! but I like that feeling I get after working hard. That tired but good feeling.

Tonight plans included lighting up the chiminea and then watching the movie “Marley and Me”.  I can hardly wait.

Trip to Big Bend

At the McDonald Observatory

At the McDonald Observatory

Just got back home from my eight day trip to Big Ben. My husband and I woke up early on October 1 and headed off to Balmorhea State Park. This park is know for its spring fed pool. The water is a constant 72 – 76 degrees. We arrived early evening – just enough time to take a quick dip in the pool with our snorkels. The great time about going this time of year is that we were practically the only people in the pool area.

The next day (Friday-Oct 2) we decided to drive down to Fort Davis and take a look around. We drove up to the McDonald Observatory to took a look at the new telescope. We then ate a picnic lunch at a spot off the road. We then decided to drive back into town and check out Fort Davis. We spent the afternoon looking around at the buildings and hiking on some trails. The funny story about this trip was going through Wild Rose Pass. As we were driving though the pass, Marc saw what appeared to be roses growing beside the road. Of course, we stopped to take a look. We laughed so hard when we discovered that the “wild roses” were really plastic roses that were woven onto the plants. After all that hiking we were hot and tired and ready for another dip in the pool at Balmorhea.

On Saturday (Oct 3) we pulled our trailer down to Fort Davis and met up with some friends. It was a rainy day but we managed to go to a flea market that is held the first Saturday of the month and to some other small shops. The most fastinating shop was the Broom Making shop. The owner was kind enough to demonstrate how brooms were make in the 1800’s. I was so impressed with his broom that I bought one. It looks exactly like a witches broom. And it is a good broom too. That evening we all went up to the McDonald Observatory for an evening program. The only disappointment was the cloudy weather. We were unable to look through a telescope.

Sunday (Oct 4) we head on down to Terlingua. Terlingua is an interesting spot on the road. It is a hot and dusty place. We did meet with the outfitters to pick up the needed “sort of” water proof bags to pack for our trip down the Rio Grande River. After packing our bags we decided to take a short hike in Big Bend. We drove up to the Chiso mountains/basin and hike a trail up the mountains.

Monday (Oct 5) we start our trip down the river – in canoes. Now I thought this was going to be a river rafting trip and all that I was going to have to do was sit in a raft and hang on. No, I was going to have to paddle. Luckily, the food was with our guide. I was real nervous about the whole canoeing ideal. Marc and I have paddled around lakes but never in a river where we would encounter rapids. It was not to far down the river that we turned over our canoe. Not surprising since I do not know much about canoes. After that first dumping experience we were paddling pretty good. We saw all sorts of sights – birds, horses, cattle. But it was not until we got into the canyon that it was most impressive. There was a spot that our guide called the Texas and Mexican gates that was very scary for me. It was a place with these huge boulders that we were going to have to get our canoes and supplies around. After much walking around and looking things over the guide came up with a plan to get us through this spot. I was glad the guide made it though. Marc and I were not so lucky. We ran our canoe into the canyon wall and the next thing I knew we were once again in the river. It was not too much farther that a spot was found for us to camp for the night. Our guide’s name was Bobski. I was impressed at how easy he made canoing look. I was also impressed with his cooking skills along the trail. For supper, we had salad, potatoes, steaks, and brownies for dessert. He also served a Merlot wine with our meal. I really thought for a camping trip that this was five star treatment.

On Tuesday (Oct 6) I was a little apprehensive about canoing. I did not want to spend time in the water again. I had a fantastic day. We did experience some rapids but they were the type that Marc and I could handle. The temperature in the canyon was also cool too. It made me feel small to look up and see these massive walls of stone on either side of the river. It was also a very quiet place.

In The Santa Elena

Marc had a hard time with the silence but it was something that I enjoyed. We canoed out of the canoe and then our trip was over. We drove back to our trailer and then spent the evening at the laundry mat washing our smelly, wet clothes.

Wednesday (Oct 7) – We woke up and the air was cool. We decided that we would hike around Big Bend until lunch and then pack up our trailer and travel a few miles to get a head start on our way back home.
We camped at Seminole State Park just outside of Del Rio. This park featured a canyon with Indian Art on the walls. We were not able to see this. They take guided tours for this and they did not have one going on when we arrived. However, we stumbled on a fantastic sight. We hiked a trail called the Windmill trail. We came to a spot in the trail that had a spring. Marc did some investigating and discovered a spot for Monarch butterflies. There must have been about 25-30 butterflies by this spring.
