It’s Back to Work Today

Well, today will be my first full day back at the office. After thinking about yesterday, I decided to go in for a few hours and see the damage that was in my e-mails and on top of my desk. I wanted to prepare myself so my blood pressure would not go through the roof. I only worked for about 3 hours. This is what I learned…..my chair is as hard as a rock and my bum was killing my after only three hours.

So…..here is my new “best friend”….that is – if an inanimate object can be your best friend. 😜

I have written before how my favorite time of the day is early morning when I read the paper and drink lots of coffee. Of course to do this, I get up early, early….well, the Houston Chronicle had been letting me down for the last several months. The paper was being delivered late….I could not read it before having to get ready for work so I was reading the online edition. While I have been recuperating, it was not a problem because I was not going anywhere. I was paying a lot of money to actually get a real paper that I could turn real pages, spill my coffee on, and tear out articles, and most importantly work the Suduko puzzle. (I always think I will have a mentally sharp day if I can complete the puzzle rather quickly….) So, yesterday I took the step of canceling the real paper and getting the online edition only. I will be saving a lot of money…the online edition is only $2.50 per week, while the subscription I had cost $7.55 per week. Don’t know what I will do about the puzzle.

Since I’m trying to get back to my “regular” routine, I decided to finally step on the scale. I was afraid of what the numbers would be because I think I look about 4-5 months pregnant. Surprise, surprise….I was down 5 pounds. After giving it some thought….that is probably how much my uterus weighed since the doctor said it was the size of a watermelon. 😜

Thanks for listening to my lamenting.

On the way to Arkansas

Today Marc and I are on the way to bring home my daughters “stuff”. She is moving out of the dorm since she will be spending the spring semester in New York.

The day started off early. We were on the road by 6:30am. After driving for an hour we stopped at McDonalds for breakfast. I was able to have my coffee fix – a peppermint mocha coffee with a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.

On the road we noticed the color of the trees.

Very pretty!

The trip usually takes 8-9 hours. To pas the time I am reading this book.

20111214-150725.jpg So far I really like the story. Here is a quote from the book that I like.

The berries. I realize the answer to who I am lies in that handful of poisonous berries. If I held them out to save Peeta because I knew I would be shunned if I came back without him, them I am despicable. If I held them out because I loved him, I am self-centered, although forgivable. But if I held them out to defy the Capitol, I am someone of worth. The trouble is, I don’t know what I was going on inside me at the moment.

Just a little bit longer and we should be at our destination

Socks

I was going through the pictures  in my camera and I came across this picture of Socks.  Socks was twelve years old when this picture was taken.  You can not see it very well but she has a bump on her back that is cancer.  This cancer is caused from the shots that were given to her though the years between her shoulder blade by the vet.  At the time, it was not known that giving animals shots in the same place can cause a cancerous growth.

I love this picture of her.  I just wished that I had some pictures of her when she was younger.

Shopping on the Weekend

This weekend my dear husband was working on both Saturday and Sunday so it was a perfect opportunity for me to get some shopping done on Saturday.  I love going to Kohl’s when I have a 30% off coupon.  I purchased 2 turtleneck sweaters, 2 little girl dresses, some exercise pants, and a new commercial brownie pan.  The total bill was $89.38.  According to the receipt I saved a total of $137.42.  I also received a $10.00 cash to use at Kohl’s next week.

The little dresses are for a 3 year old I am sponsoring for Christmas.  To complete the outfits I needed to get some tights, shoes and some underwear.  I was disappointed that I could not find these at Kohl’s so I headed over to Wal-mart.  I was able to pick up the rest of the items there along with these really cute monkey dolls.  I was so taken with these dolls that I purchased three of them.  I am giving one to the little girl.

While I was posing the dolls, Maximus kept on trying to steal the dolls.  Here is Maximus looking sheepishly out of the window after I chastised him.

Neat Desk Scanner – Do I want one?

The other day I saw one of these advertised on the television and thought this is just what I need to get organized. One of my favorite pastimes is to look at magazines and tear out the parts of the magazine that I think I want to keep. I have hundreds of magazines pages of recipes that I want to make but never have the time to do it. I thought wouldn’t this machine be perfect for getting all those magazines recipes organized. I know, I know – if I just threw them away and then just stopped tearing up magazines then I would not have to worry about all these pieces of paper that I need do do something with. The Neat Desk Scanner sales for $380.00 on amazon.com. That is pretty steep for a scanner especially when I already have one of those combination scanner/fax/printers for my computer. I was especially envious when a critique on the Neat Scanner was done on one of the blogs that I keep up with. Of course, it got rave reviews – I would give it rave reviews if the company sent me one to try for free. I know, I know – it is just sour grapes because I have all these unorganized papers but not a new Neat Scanner to organize them.

A Quiet Sunday Afternoon

When Marc’s alarm clock when off this morning, it dawned on me that I forgot to set my alarm.  The next thought in my head was “I don’t want to go to work today.”  After a few minutes I realized that it was Sunday and I did not have to go to work.  With Marc working it was one of those days that I have all to myself. I like to have a day ever so often like that because I can pretty much do whatever I want, eat whatever I want, and watch whatever I want on the television.

I spent some time this afternoon updating my iTunes, iPhone and iTouch.  I think I am going to like Icloud.  I have always had a hard time getting all my devices synced with the same data.

Then I spent some time cleaning off my roll top desk.  This is the desk that I have my laptop.  I use this mainly in the morning when Marc is still asleep.

Here is the before picture of the mess that I needed to clean up.And here is the after clean up session.

These pictures were taken with my iPhone and I was able to upload them using the iCloud program.

Vulnerability

I came across this Brene Brown discussing the “Power of Vulnerability”.  The talk is about 20 minutes but I thought well worth the time to listen to.  Here is the link.  http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/brene_brown_on_vulnerability.html

Marc’s Retirement/Leaving Missouri City Party

Marc’s coworkers celebrated the time he worked with them by presenting him with this white leather fire helmet, his badge and ribbons.  We had a great time talking about old times and changes that have taken place since he made his move to Pearland.

I Survived Another Tax Season – Now to Get Back on Track

Yea – I survived another tax season. Monday this past week sure was a hectic day. I am still trying to get back on track. On Monday I was at the office by 7:00am and worked until 9:30pm. Talk about a long day.

I read in an article somewhere that what you do on Monday sets the tone for the entire week. I think that is so true. Because of the deadline to get all those tax returns done,  I did not do my regular morning exercise program. ( I am usually exercising by 5:30 am on most mornings. )  Anyway, all this week I have had a hard time with wanting to exercise – and mentally coming up with excuses to cut my exercise time short. At work, I look at my desk and I seem to be in a fog on what to do next. I am having a hard time prioritizing. The same is happening at home. I look around at all the things that I need to do after weeks of neglect and I can not seem to focus on what needs to be done first.

The question is – How do I get back on track? Should I make a list of things to do? Sometimes lists frustrate me because I find things to do that are not on my list and do them instead of what is listed.  Then I am mad at myself for not marking anything off my list.  I know the key is to focus on one task at a time. So here I am it is nearly 8:00am and I still need to get ready for work. So here is my list for right now.

1. Get ready for work.
2. Go to work.
3. Sit at my desk and finish the financial statement I was working on yesterday but did not finish.
4. Start on those payroll tax returns that have an end of month deadline. (I hate deadlines.)

Evening list – after supper.
1. Help my son move into his apartment. My ulterior motive is to check out the apartment.
2. Make grocery list and maybe do the shopping – if it is not too late.
3. Fall into bed exhausted.

Last Day of Tax Season 2011

Today is the last day of tax season.  I am not at work yet but I am sure that it is going to be a very hectic day. The plan is to skip my usual exercising and be at the office by 7:00 am. Skipping the exercise may not be the wisest move in the long wrong because I read in one of my magazines that exercising on Monday will set the tone for the entire week.  Oh well — got to get the remainder of those tax returns out.  (Personally, I feel very abused when clients drop off their work on the last day for me to complete. )

I know that I probably should have gone into the office to work some this weekend but after increasing my hours for the past 8 weeks I just needed some downtime.  I spent Saturday morning at the gun show with my dear husband and son.  I have never attended a gun show before.  There were guns and more guns and more guns.   We did have a nice time eating at “Kim Son” afterwards.  Later in the afternoon we attended a fiftieth wedding anniversary party.  It is always fun celebrating these milestones with friends, especially seeing people I have not seen in a while.

Sunday was the Volunteer Fire Department Open House.  Actually, that was my excuse for not working – I was volunteering at the Open House.  My job was to help with keep the fire pole line in order.  The kids just loved sliding down the pole.
