Blue Monday

I learned from the Houston Chronicle that tomorrow is Blue Monday.  A psychologist in the United Kingdom calculated the most depressing day on the calendar.  That day is  the third Monday in January which is on January 18.  To calculate the most depressing day on the calendar such factors as weather and debt were considered.

I can see why “Blue Monday” is in January.  It is winter time.  It is too cold most of the time to do the outdoor activities that I like to do.  The trees  and plants look dreary and dead.  Also, the bills for all those Christmas presents have arrived and everyone is trying to figure out how to pay the bills and wishing that they had not spent so much money.  According to the article the solution to “Blue Monday” is to get happy.  So my question is how do I “get happy”?

As I read the paper, I came upon the solution in black and white.  An article in the Parade section of the paper listed the following on “How to Get Happy”.

  1. Act happy – even if you aren’t yet.  Does that make me a poser?  Supposedly, it will cheer me up and everyone else around me.  I definitely will give that a try tomorrow at work.
  2. Seek out positive distractions.  Think about what gives me pleasure and do it. Don’t wait for the activity to come to me – take the action myself.  This sounds fun.  But I will have to wait until the evening to do this.  I do not think my boss will like me daydreaming at work or taking time out to go to the movies.
  3. Do one thing at a time – at least for one or two hours a day.  Apparently, multitasking can make me feel tense.  Focusing on one activity  calming and will  allow me to enjoy the experience fully.  No more watching TV and reading a book at the same time.  Or watching TV and washing dishes.  My personal favorite is watching TV and falling asleep during the show. Actually, that is quite pleasurable.
  4. Take action.  Supposedly, passivity will make me feel worse.  Choosing to change, even a very small step, is a mood enhancer.  I believe that taking action will make me happy.  I just need to remember to take the small step instead of the giant leap.  The giant leap is what usually causes me such stress.  So the small step that I am going to take tomorrow is act  positive about tomorrow in hopes that I will beat “Blue Monday” and have a happy day.

What about you? How are you planning on beating the blues?

A Pampering Session at Home

I was thinking that  an evening of pampering was just what I needed to relax during this holiday season to release the stress of holiday shopping, baking, and gift wrapping.  I was digging through some old magazine clippings and came across this recipe for a hair mask that would make my hair so very soft. This recipe was in the March 2008 Health magazine.

Recipe for Softness

1 egg yolk
2 Tablespoon mayonnaise
2 Tablespoon olive oil
1 avocado

Directions: Combine ingredients in a bowl.  Apply the mixture to dry hair and slip on a shower cap.  After 15 minutes, rinse.

I thought perfect.  I have all the ingredients.  Recipe seems easy enough.  I do so want soft hair.  I am the only one home tonight.  This is going to work out great.  I envision myself quickly preparing this recipe.  Applying it to my hair and relaxing in a chair for 15 minutes while this mixture magically changes my coarse hair into softness.  I am giddy with excitement.

So I start gathering my ingredients.  Good. I have everything.  I separate the egg.  I measure out the mayonnaise and the olive oil.  Piece of cake.  Now for the avocado.  I cut the avocado.  It is so pretty looking.  No brown spots at all.  I get my spoon.  I am ready to dig out the inside of the avocado.  I start to press the spoon into the avocado flesh and I keep applying more and more pressure and my spoon is not scooping up much flesh.  I have decided that this avocado is not soft but maybe even hard. Not to worry.  I know what to do.  I will put this in the little chopper and chop it until it is smooth.  Well I pulverized all the ingredients.  I thought perfect.  It is so pretty and light green.  It even looks  smooth. I just know my hair will be  very soft.  Off to the bathroom I go.  I dip my hand in to the mixture.  I feel some lumps but I am not worried. I have pulverized this mixture.  So I put the mixture on my hair and try to smooth it on but actually there must have been  a bit more  lumps than I thought.  As I spread the mixture on my hair the avocado pieces fell all over the sink, floor and wall.  I tried as best as I could to get it on my hair.  The more I tried to smooth it on the messier the bathroom became. Finally, I stuffed all my hair in the shower cap.  But instead of spending 15 minutes relaxing I am spending it cleaning up all these avocado chunks that have fallen all over the bathroom.  As I wipe the last chunk  up the timer goes off and I am so happy that I get to wash this mixture out of my hair.  Does my hair feel softer?  I really can’t tell.  Maybe my husband will notice when he gets home from fire training.

Well, this little pampering session was not as relaxing as I thought it would be.  Will I try this recipe for softness again?  Only if I find a very soft avocado.

Thanksgiving 2009

This year we had a hard time deciding what to do for Thanksgiving. At one time I was going to cook a turkey that my adult son had purchased. We were going to have a traditional family meal like we have done in past years except that all the extended family was not coming over. Then my son learned that he had to work on Thanksgiving. (He is an EMT) So after much discussion we decided that we would go out to eat for a change. For once I would not be spending all morning cooking. I did make a cheesecake for later in the day. Then for the rest of the day I read a book, knitted and tried to figure out what to do. It was nice but I actually missed the cooking. So two o’clock arrived and we were off to the Cracker Barrell Restaurant. Now my father-in-law warned us that there would probably be a wait. I thought my dear husband was going to create a huge scene when he discovered the wait was over an hour-long. Fortunately, Cracker Barrell has a nice shop that we spent the time in looking around. Finally after waiting over an hour, the waitress seated us at a table. I ordered the standard Thanksgiving meal – turkey, ham, dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans and a piece of pumpkin pie. My husband and daughter ordered something else off the regular menu and they were upset when the waitress told them they were out of coleslaw. Everything was going pretty well. We finished eating and paid our bill. Now, for those who do not know, my husband is a firefighter. As we were leaving the restaurant, he received a fire call about a shed being on fire. So now we are speeding down the road with the emergency lights blazing to get to this house that has a shed on fire. I was for sure that we were going to hit a car. Anyway, my stomach began to feel a little queasy from all that fast driving. Fortunately, the shed fire was very small. (The owners put ashes in a plastic bag and set the bag in the shed.) Nobody was hurt.

In conclusion, my husband decided that next year we would stay home for Thanksgiving and we would cook the traditional Thanksgiving feast. Apparently, having leftover turkey is better than waiting in line for an hour to eat. And I agree.

This evening we are planning on watching the University of Texas and Texas A&M football game. My daughter is cheering for A&M. I am cheering for Texas. Go Longhorns!

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

This past Sunday during worship services we sang the following song.

When Upon Life’s Billows

When upon live’s billows you are temptest-tossed,
When you are discourage thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all:
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Chorus: Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God had done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God had done.

This song seems to have more meaning for me this year. Many of my friends are dealing with money issues, health issues, and relationship issues. For me it seems that maybe I have been tossed about some and have gotten discouraged. So I thought it would be appropriate for me to make a Thanksgiving list this year of my blessings.

1. I am thankful for God and his saving grace.
2. I am thankful for my kids who are young adults – even when it seems at times that we do not get along so well.
3. I am thankful for my husband who loves me even when I am not being the nicest person.
4. I am thankful that my husband and I have jobs so we are able to pay our bills.
5. I am thankful that we have our health – even though we have aches and pains.
6. I am thankful for our house – a place to sleep.
7. I am thankful that I live in America.
8. I am thankful for my extended family. It is hard this year because we are not able to be together like we have been for past Thanksgiving Day.
9. I am just plain thankful that I have been granted another day of life.

Labor Day

Here are a few facts about Labor day taken from the U.S. Department of Labor website.

1.Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

2. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

The morning was spent cleaning out the garage with my husband. The garage is considered his domain so basically I just did what ever he wanted me to do. Then in the afternoon I spent worked cleaning out this really large closet that I call “the dungeon”. To end the day I invited my in-laws and my grown son over for supper. We had a nice evening eating and visiting.

So how did you spend your Labor Day Holiday?
