What Did You Do This Weekend?

It is Monday morning. The weekend is over. I am sitting here wondering why my weekends seem to go by so fast. So here is my weekend recap.

Friday I woke up at 5am to participate in the early morning spinning class. I was the only participant. There is a good and bad side of being the only participant. The good – the instructor knows me and I get individual attention. The bad – I can’t slack off at all. She is always calling out my name telling me to go faster. I know it is for my good that she does this but sometimes it is irritating. But I then try to do whatever she is saying she wants me to do.

After spinning, I came home and worked on the grocery list. The rest of the morning was spent at my favorite grocery store – HEB.

After lunch, it was salsa making time.

Marc, Emily, and I then went to Gina’s Restaurant for an early supper. Gina’s is a new Italian restaurant in Friendswood. The last few times we tried to eat there the waiting time for a table was too long. By going early, we were able to get a table.

Then it was movie time. We went to see “This is the End.” As Marc would say – that was two hours of my life I will never get back. I thought the movie was horrible. It was horribly crude and nasty. As you can guess, I did not like the movie.

Saturday I went to spinning class again. Then all morning and afternoon I made salsa.

Sunday I went to worship services in the morning. I made salsa in the afternoon. In the evening, I went to worship services again and then helped decorate for vacation bible school.

I was busy this weekend. I was able to relax some so I would say I accomplished a lot.

Some of the tomatoes from my garden.

The results of my canning efforts this weekend.

So far this year I have processed 35 pint jars of salsa. I have enough tomatoes for one more canning session. Each session produces 5-6 jars of salsa. So my spring tomatoes will have produced approximately 40 jars. Not to bad for only having 6 tomato plants.

Making New Habits

I discovered a new app for my iPhone. It is called Lift. It is an app to help we with making new habits. I have downloaded the app. I even set up some new habits that I would like to develop. One of these habits is to try to post regularly on my blog. So far I’m not good at checking in to announce to the Lift community that I’m making progress on the habits I have listed I want to develop. I know that I made writing on my blog as one of the habits….I decided I would try to write three times per week. My June 3 was my first post after making my new habit list. ( I thought I would post Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.) Guess what….I’m stressing out because I let yesterday come and go without posting anything.

I spent Wednesday morning picking produce from my garden. I’m a little disappointed in my tomatoes. I thought I bought Roma tomato plants so I could practice making and canning salsa again. The tomatoes that are growing are not very big….they look like cherry Roma tomatoes. It is going to take a lot of them to make a jar of salsa.

Home and Garden

My home and garden thoughts … I think my zucchini  plants have had it.  I think I will plant some okra, cucumbers, and eggplant.

I would like to freeze or put up…homemade spaghetti sauce if my tomatoes ever ripen.

I plant to work on the clutter in the house.  I have accumulated a lot of  “stuff” living in the same place for 26 years.

I have to absolutely….clean my office and office closet.  This room has become suffocating with all its junk that I can not stand to be in it for very long.

Working in the Yard

We were going to work in our yard yesterday but the rain made that impossible.  Yesterday was a good time to organize things in the house.  Anyway,  we pulled up all the dried up bluebonnets in the front of the house.  We always love the bluebonnets in the spring but they do look ugly when they are going to seed.  I placed the dry seed pods in brown paper bags.  I will set them in the sun and supposedly when the temperature reached 90 degrees the seed pods will open up.  The seeds will drop to the bottom of the bag which I can later collect.

We have a spot in the front of our house that we have never been good at having something grow.  We usually would plant annuals.  However, nothing could last through the summer.  We decided to plant Ixora.  This plant in a perennial.  Supposedly, it likes hot, dry soil.  I have high hopes that this is the plant for this spot.  The flowers will be yellow.

I am very proud of my vegetable garden.  This year I planted tomato seeds.  I tried planting tomato seeds last year and it was a complete failure.  I ended up having to buy plants at the nursery. This year my plants look very good.  Now the problem will be how to keep the birds from eating all the fruit from the plants.  I have included some pictures of my garden.  I attached some shiny strips from some play pom-poms to keep the birds away.  I am thinking that I might need a scare crow too.

A Near Perfect Saturday

What makes a perfect Saturday? This may sound crazy but for me it means getting up at 5:30 am. Yes, I did say 5:30 am. I love to have my quiet time in the morning – a little bible study, a cup of coffee, and then after that reading the newspaper. At 7:30 am I head up to our exercise room. When we remodeled our garage – well, we actually tore down the old garage and built a new one and made it two stories – we added the exercise room. I decided to do some circuit training for about 30 minutes. After cooling down and eating breakfast, it is time for my weekly Saturday call from my mom. Today we had a good conversation. It lasted an hour. I felt good about all the things we talked about.

Then it was time for yard work. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining. It was not too hot – just 80 degrees. It was fun mowing the grass and raking the leaves. I also worked in the small garden we try to grow. Last weekend I planted spinach and blue bonnets. This weekend, I planted collards. Our tomato plants are growing nicely. They have some blossoms on them. I am hoping the fall garden is a bigger success than the spring. Truth be told, it will not take much for this garden to be better than the spring one. We also decided to take a pile of trash to the landfill. I know anyone reading this would say Yuk!!! but I like that feeling I get after working hard. That tired but good feeling.

Tonight plans included lighting up the chiminea and then watching the movie “Marley and Me”.  I can hardly wait.

Spring

My Blue Bonnets

Today is the first day of spring.  It was beautiful.  The sun was bright and shining.  The weather was just right – not too hot or too cold.  The perfect day to work in the yard.  The flowers are blooming.

It was too pretty of a day to be indoors.  But what was I doing???  Working on tax returns.  Such is the life of a tax accountant.

After working late, my husband and I went to Lowe’s.  This is the time of year I love the gardening section.  And of course, I did buy plants that will need to be planted.  One of my purchases was a pencil cactus.  The cashier was telling a story about his father poking his eye with his pencil cactus.  I hope I do not poke my eye.  We also bought some begonias.  The plan now is to find time this weekend to put these plants in the ground.

What did you do on the first day of Spring?
